What is Clanfield and how does it relate to Horndean?
Clanfield is a village in East Hampshire. The Hampshire Astronomical Group describes its observatory as being on the border of the villages of Horndean and Clanfield, which gives a sense of how close the two are. For council services Clanfield sits under East Hampshire District Council (EHDC) and Hampshire County Council. EHDC's published 2023 election results show a separate Clanfield ward, which elected John Smart and Christopher Tonge, as covered in our councillors and voting guide.
What is there to do in Clanfield?
The village hall is Clanfield Memorial Hall on South Lane, PO8 0RB. Its own website says it is run as a charity, the Clanfield Parish Institute, by volunteer trustees, and that exercise classes, talks, bowls, ukulele, dance, craft, pre-school groups and private parties take place there. It has a main hall with a stage and two smaller meeting rooms, all with kitchen access. Bookings are made through the hall's website, which has a calendar showing availability. The hall also hosts the annual village Remembrance Sunday service and regular blood donation sessions, and one of the village's defibrillators is by the main doors. The war memorial in the garden in front of the hall was built by staff and students of Horndean Technology College and unveiled in June 2014, according to the hall.
Can I visit Clanfield Observatory?
Yes, on ticketed open evenings. The Hampshire Astronomical Group has run since 1960 and operates Clanfield Observatory. Its open evenings page lists public evenings at 7:15pm on 17 and 18 October, 21 and 22 November and 19 and 20 December 2026, and on dates through to April 2027, with the April 2027 evenings marked as adults only. On 5 October 2026 the page marked many as sold out, including every date in October, November and December. Prices are shown as £18.00 for adults and £8.00 for children, including refreshments, with a lower age limit of eight. If the weather is bad the group says the evening still goes ahead with a tour, refreshments and a talk, and you are invited back free of charge to complete the observing on another clear night. The group also holds monthly public talks at Clanfield Memorial Hall at 8:00pm, with entry listed as £4 for non-members and £2 for under 16s. The EHDC news item of 30 September 2026 reports that five district councillors donated £6,000 towards an accessible toilet extension at the observatory.

A little history
Wikipedia gives the village name as Old English for a cleared field and says the Church of St James dates to 1305 and was rebuilt in 1875. The village grew from a small farming community, and the Memorial Hall's website says the original village is now known as Old Clanfield. Its first hall was a Nissen hut brought from Aldershot in 1919, replaced by the present brick building, which opened in 1982.
